Daydream for Woodwind Quintet
Daydream
Woodwind Quintet No. 3
Music by Johannes Brahms
Arranged by Steve Winstead
Grade 5
Duration 8:00
This colorful contemporary chamber work captures the wandering, unpredictable nature of the imagination. Moving freely between playful energy, lyrical reflection, sudden changes of character, and moments of quiet introspection, the music unfolds much like a daydream itself—one thought giving way unexpectedly to the next.
Written for the traditional combination of flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn, and bassoon, Daydream makes full use of the contrasting personalities and colors of the woodwind quintet. Melodic ideas pass fluidly among the five players, emerging from constantly changing textures that range from transparent and delicate to animated and rhythmically energetic. Individual instruments frequently step into the foreground before being absorbed again into the larger conversation.
The composer describes the work as balancing a reverence for the tradition of the woodwind quintet with a spirit of innovation. The result is a substantial and engaging addition to the contemporary chamber repertoire—one that gives each performer an active musical role while inviting audiences on an imaginative journey through wistful reverie, playful fancy, and introspection.
