Euclidean Rhapsody

by Steve Winstead

Grade 5
Duration: ca. 9:00

Euclidean Rhapsody is a challenging piece of music based on shapes. The title references the Greek mathematician Euclid, whose work includes many of the fundamentals we know today as Euclidean Geometry.

The main four-note theme is a musical representation of an isosceles trapezoid, a quadrilateral with two parallel sides and matching angles at its base. Throughout the piece, this theme is iterated and transformed, taking the listener on a journey through angular melodies, jagged accompaniment, and trigonometric chorales.
